SERGEANT-AT-ARMS / WEB-SERGEANT - ROBERT J. YANACEK

Robert YanacekRobert J. Yanacek was born in Euclid, Ohio in 1959.  Following graduation from Euclid Senior High School in 1977 he attended Cleveland State University for one year, then followed in his father's footsteps by enlisting into the Marine Corps Reserve in March of 1978.

With the completion of his first year of college studies, Robert reported to Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina to undergo recruit training.  Upon graduation from 3rd Recruit Training Battalion Robert's initial assignment was as an infantryman with the reserve unit located in Cleveland, Ohio; 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines.  Over the next three and one-half years, he continued his college studies while serving as a member of the Selected Marine Corps Reserve.  During this time he was promoted through the rank of Sergeant and served in the billets of Operations NCO, Battalion Training NCO, and finally as a platoon sergeant.

Upon being conferred a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Cleveland State University in 1982, Robert was selected for assignment to recruiting duty as a canvassing recruiter at Recruiting Station Cleveland, Ohio.  When a critical shortage developed in the recruiting station headquarters, he was reassigned to the Operations Section and over the next four years was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant and served in  several billets including Data Systems Operator, Operations NCO, Quality Control NCO, and Assistant MEPS Liaison NCO.

Transferring to Recruiting Station Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1986, he served the next six years  as the Operations Chief and as MEPS Liaison and was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant.

Departing Harrisburg in 1992, Robert returned to Recruiting Station Cleveland, Ohio and served  in the billets of MEPS Liaison and Operations Chief over a three-and-a-half year period.

In 1995 he was transferred to Headquarters, Fourth Marine Corps District in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania where he served as the Operations Special Projects Officer and the District Operation Chief until his retirement from the Marine Corps in October of 2001.

Following his retirement, Robert and his family moved to the Outer Banks of North Carolina where he is employed as the Operations Manager at Ray Communications, Inc.

Robert is married to the former Diane M. Medlen of Euclid, Ohio.  They have seven children and one grandchild.

Robert's personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation medal with two gold stars in lieu of the second and third awards, and the Navy Achievement medal with one gold star in lieu of a second award.  His other military awards include the Navy Unit Citation (5 awards), the Meritorious Unit Commendation (5 awards), the Good Conduct Medal (6 awards), the Selected Marine Corps Reserve Medal, the National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), the Marine Corps Recruiting Ribbon (5 awards), and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal.

Robert's hobbies include historical research which recently won him recognition for his work in documenting the history of Marine Bombing Squadron Six-Thirteen's service during the Second World War.  He is currently a member of the American Association of Webmasters, the Association for Positive Ethical Exchange, the HTML Writers Guild, the International Association of Webmasters & Designers, the International Webmasters Association, the Marine Bombing Squadron Six-Thirteen Association, the Marine Corps League, the Web Standards Group, and the World War Two Studies Association.

Robert was appointed to the current offices of Sergeant-at-Arms and Web-Sergeant for the Marine Corps League Outer Banks Detachment on 20 November 2006.
