FREE AND DISCOUNTED PRODUCTS AND SERVICES FOR VETERANS

Prescription Discount Card Program

The first program worthy of mention is the Prescription Discount Card Program.  This program provides discounted prescription medications to all residents of participating counties, with an average savings of 24-percent.

The Prescription Discount Card Program is offered by the National Association of Counties and is administered by Caremark.  There is no cost for participating, and the only requirements are that you obtain a Prescription Discount Card, present it to the pharmacists at the time of purchase, and use it at participating pharmacies and drug stores.

Residents of Currituck, Dare, and many other North Carolina counties can obtain their card on-line at: http://www.rxprintacard.biz/naco/default.aspx

Unfortunately, it appears the neither Hyde nor Tyrell counties participate at this time.  Residents of non-participating counties may wish to bring this program to the attention of their respective county officials as there is no cost to the county, provided they are members of the National Association of Counties.

Once you have printed your card, you next need to locate a participating pharmacy or drug store.  There are many of them throughout our local areafrom Moyock to Hatteras.  To locate one, use the participating  pharmacy location tool at: https://www.caremark.com/wps/myportal/LOCAL_PHARMACY

You then place your order with the pharmacist and show them your Prescription Discount Card.  That's it.  Your savings is immediate and your purchase price will reflect the program's discount.

Dare County Transportation Program

Those needing transportation in Dare County should be aware that the Dare County Transportation System provides public transportation in Dare County Monday through Friday as well as  out-of-county medical transportation on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Out-of-county transportation services is provided to the the following medical/hospital areas in North Carolina and Virginia: Elizabeth City; Edenton; Greenville; Chapel Hill and Duke; Chesapeake; Norfolk; Virginia Beach; Portsmouth; Newport News; Suffolk, and; the nearest Veterans’ hospital in Hampton.

Dare County Transportation System vans are operated by grants from the North Carolina Department of Transportation and funds from Dare County, and may not operate in competition with private transportation such as taxi (same-day or immediate service).  Therefore, a one day notice for transportation is required to prepare a daily schedule for curb to curb service.

All vehicles are equipped with cell phone and riders will be given a calling card when exiting so they may call the van when ready for return trips.  For safety reasons, drivers may assist riders while boarding and exiting the county's vehicles.  However, should a rider needs further assistance, the rider is responsible to have someone accompany them inside the residence, and/or have someone accompany them while riding the county's vehicle.

Transportation is not available on weekends or holidays observed by Dare County employees.  These holidays are: New Year’s Day; Martin Luther King’s birthday; Good Friday; Memorial Day; Independence Day; Labor Day; Veterans Day; Thanksgiving (two days), and; and Christmas (three days).

Although this service has been free to residents in the past, as of mid-January 2011 a one-way fare of $3.00 will be charged for in-county trips while the one-way fare for out-of-county trips is $7.00.

Remember that you must make your reservations at least one day in advance.  To make your reservations, contact the Dare County Reservations and Information Line at: 252-475-5640.
