Detachment Participates in Kelly's Saint Patrick's Day Parade | 03/20/2011

On 20 March 2011 members of the Outer Banks Detachment participated in the 22nd Annual Kelly's Saint Patrick's Day Parade in Nags Head.  Although the parade was only about one-mile in length, it is estimated that between 10,000 to 15,000 spectators were in attendance.  Needless to say, our detachment was able to let many local residents know that the Marine Corps League is indeed present and working to make our community a better place here on the Outer Banks.  Those who participated reported that our detachment was well-received by spectators with applause and expressions of "thanks" throughout the entire parade route.  Members who participated in this event were: Dean Tyler; Robert Yanacek; Bob Messinger; Gary Felder; Gene Martin, and; Kevin Wescott.

Detachment Fundraiser | 02/22/2011

On February 22nd three members of our detachment staff attended a meeting at Belk in Kill Devil Hills to receive information and details concerning the store's semi-annual charity sale.  This event is an excellent fundraising opportunity for the detachment and in the past has proven to be very beneficial in raising funds.  Basically, our members sell tickets to the general public at a cost of $5 per ticket.  This ticket entitles the bearer to a private sale at Belk on April 16, 2011 in which they will receive a $5 discount on each separate purchase, as well as a special storewide discount ranging from 20 to 70-percent!  People can purchase as many tickets as they want and will receive a $5 discount for each ticket as well as the storewide discounted prices, however they are only permitted to use one $5 discount ticket each time they pay at a cash register.  Each ticket sold by our members goes directly to the detachment to further our mission.  So, if we sell 500 tickets, the detachment will raise $2,500.  This is a rare situation where everyone wins:  Belk receives money for the sale of items and a charitable contribution tax write-off; the detachment receives the proceeds from our ticket sales, and; those who buy tickets get their $5 back in the form of a discount as well as some really excellent discounted prices on high quality products.  At the upcoming March meeting we will be passing out tickets to members and will be asking them to sign up to donate a few hours to sell these tickets to the general public at Belk.  We will be selling these tickets at Belk on our assigned dates and times, which are primarily on the weekends.  The exact dates and times are available on our detachment calendar.  We strongly urge every member to support their detachment with this excellent opportunity.  Gung-Ho, Marines!

Website Update | 01/28/2011

Greetings fellow Leathernecks.  I'm sure that you have noticed that our website has a new look.  We've spent a great deal of time since our meeting earlier this month to make some major revisions.  To begin with, the entire website has been restyled using the colors of the Marine Corps League: Black; white; scarlet, and; gold.  Also added were some new features including a scripted search that should make it easier to locate information, and a script that will display photographs.  An interactive map was also added to the contact page showing the precise location of our meeting place, the Kern Pitts Center, as well as an interactive calendar which displays all detachment meetings and events.  Lastly, the header of our website has been redesigned to capture the natural and raw beauty of our area, adorned by our official seal and name of the Outer Banks Detachment.  We trust that you will be pleased with the results and look forward to your comments, recommendations and, most importantly, your contributions of information and photographs you would like added to the website.

At our meeting this month, Doug Wendling administered the oath of office to our newly elected and appointed staff.  Following the oath, Kelly Chamberlain turned over his duties to our new Commandant, Dean Tyler.  Dean then presented Kelly with a plaque on behalf of our membership as a token of appreciation for his two years of faithful service to our detachment as its Commandant.  Photographs in this event can be seen at the links below.  The new Detachment officers are: Dean Tyler, Commandant; Robert Yanacek, Senior Vice-Commandant; Elvin Spivey, Junior Vice-Commandant; Dan Hudson, Judge Advocate, and; Pat Riley, Adjutant.  Bob Messinger, Doug Wendling, Kevin Wescott, and Gene Martin continue their duties as Paymaster, Public Affairs Officer, Eagle Scout Recognition Officer, and Sergeant-at-Arms, respectively.  Those interested can read about each of these men in our staff biography section.

Toys for Tots | 12/14/2010

Marines of the Outer Banks Detachment once again assisted the local Toy for Tots campaign.  The Toys for Tots program collects and distributes toys for needy children in our local community.  The 2010 drive ran from 13 November through 14 December 2010 and was once again a great success.  Members of the Outer Banks Detachment donated 114.5 man-hours and collected 504 toys!  A special thanks is extended to Bob Messinger for a fine job once again.   We also wish to thank all those members who participated in this year's effort, as well as Keri Simmons from Manteo Middle School, and all of  the students who assisted us from the various schools in Dare County.  Your collective efforts made Christmas very special for so many children here in our community.

Recruiting and Public Awareness | 12/14/2010

Two recruiting posters are available on-line for members to print and place at strategic locations in the Outer Banks area.  Getting the word out about our detachment to our fellow Marines is vital to our organization and its mission of fellowship and service to our community.  Posters provide an excellent means to assist us in locating and inviting our comrades to become members of our detachment.  In addition, each poster makes the general public aware of our presence and our commitment to our local community.  We ask that every member print and post at least two posters in locations frequented by local residents.
