NEWS AND CURRENT EVENTS

Meritorious Unit CitationDETACHMENT RECEIVES RECOGNITION.  On 11 June 2008 our detachment was awarded a Meritorious Unit Citation by the Marine Corps League, Department of North Carolina.  This citation was presented in recognition of our effort in assisting a local Marine in need and serves as a true testimony of our commitment to "Taking care of our own."  Effective immediately, Detachment members are authorized to wear the Meritorious Unit Citation ribbon.  View Citation

MEMORIAL DAY OBSERVANCE IN NAGS HEAD.  Detachment members Doug Wendling, Leonard Stone, Lee Baronet, Charlie Cameron, Bob Messinger and Robert Yanacek attended a Memorial Day service in Nags Head on 26 May 2008.  Serving as guest speaker, our Commandant inspired all present with his remarks concerning the importance of remembering those who gave their lives in defense of our Nation.

INSTALLATION OF NEW OFFICERS.  On 8 January our detachment installed its new officers: Kelly Chamberlain as Senior Vice Commandant, and; Tim Gregory as Junior Vice Commandant.  We wish to extend our best wishes to both of them.  We also extend our thanks for the faithful and honorable service to our outgoing officers, John Jumet and Paul Strehan.  View Photograph

Toys For TotsTOYS FOR TOTS Marines of the Outer Banks Detachment assisted the local Toy for Tots campaign on 14 and 15 December at the Family Dollar Store in Manteo.  The Toys for Tots program collects and distributes toys for needy children in local communities.  The Toys for Tots program in our area is headed by Ms. Laura J. Hummell.  Laura reported that this year's drive was a great success and that 819 toys were donated!  Many thanks to all those who participated in making Christmas so special for so many children of Dare, Currituck, and Hyde counties.  View Photograph 1  View Photograph 2

MARINE CORPS BIRTHDAY LUNCHEON.  This year's celebration of the 232nd birthday of the United States Marine Corps was a great success.  Everyone in attendance had a good time sharing camaraderie and their Marine Corps experiences.  View Photographs

SAD NEWS On 11 November we received word that Iwo Jima veteran and detachment member Tom Fentress suffered a massive coronary and passed away.  Tom had just attended our Marine Corps Birthday luncheon as our guest speaker and was the hit of the party with his accounts of his wartime experiences.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Fentress family.  Tom was buried on 15 November at Forest Lawn Cemetery with military honors.

Baum Center, Kill Devil Hills, NCGENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING.  Due to the large volume of tourists, we will not be having a meeting in the months of July and August.  Our next meeting will be held 9 September 2008 beginning at 1900.  Bob Messinger, our Adjutant/Paymaster, has arranged for meeting facilities at the Thomas A.
