Detachment Meeting 12Jan10

Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to the following:

Bob Messinger [and his wife Nancy] for his exemplary management of the Toys For Tots

campaigns in 2008 and 2009. Bob, his fellow Detachment members and their families

logged a total of 114 hours volunteer service and gathered 681 toys for local children in

last years campaign.

Kevin Wescott for provision of the limousine for the Toys For Tots 2009 campaign, his son

Ben Wescott’s support of the campaign and his continued efforts as Detachment Public

Affairs Officer.

The Town of Southern Shores [accepted by Detachment member Jim Pfizenmayer] for

provision of meeting facilities for the Detachment.

New member: Please welcome Dan Hudson, Corolla, NC as the newest member of our

Detachment. Dan retired from the Corps after 20 years of service and is currently an airbus

pilot, flying for FedEx. WELCOME ABOARD!

Officer Installation: Department of NC District Vice Commandant, Doug Wendling,

administered the oath of office to all 2010 elected and appointed Detachment officers

listed above.

Commandant Chamberlain congratulated all Detachment officers and reminded members

that their help is needed in continuing to grow the Detachment and performance of

veteran’s/community service activities in our area. Several ideas were advanced relative to

such service and members were asked to indicate their willingness to provide support to

the Commandant or any Detachment officer.

Veteran’s Benefit Advice: The Commandant, being 100% disabled and having a

great deal of related experience, advised that he would be glad to provide benefits

advice to any area veteran needing it.

Marine Rose Fund Raising: Public Affairs Officer, Kevin Wescott suggested sales

of Marine Roses, available at low cost through the League, by Detachment

members at store fronts, etc. as a way of raising funds for Detachment activities.

Members are asked to consider this idea and contact us if you would be willing to

assist.

Project Patriot: Providing local Marines and their families with transportation to the

VA Hospital, doctors office, grocery stores, church, etc. If you can assist with this

effort, please advise.

Detachment Visibility: It’s critical that the Detachment be viewed as a meaningful

community service element in our community and that requires continued

visibility. While the Public Affairs Officer is responsible for coordination with local

media, etc. he enlists your ideas and support in those efforts. Please contact Kevin

if you can assist: devildogdad06@gmail.com or phone: 252-202-8436

Marine Corps League Uniforms

The Commandant reminds all members that Marine Corps League uniforms must

be worn according the Uniform Code of the League. The only ornament allowed on

your League cover is the Marine Corps emblem…no other pins are appropriate.

Khaki shirts are no longer a part of the uniform. NCO ‘Blood Stripe’ blue trousers

may be worn with the short or long sleeve ‘Undress’ uniforms, are never to be

worn with the scarlet blazer, but may be worn with the formal Mess jacket. It’s

imperative that members represent the League and the Marine Corps

appropriately.

Message from the Commandant:

Fellow Marines, I am honored to be your Commandant. Let’s work together

to continue the good work of the Detachment in our community. The China

Marines had a phrase for it -- -- Gung Ho or work together. Aren’t we

the few and the proud?

Onward and upward! “Don’t bunch up and stay off the ridge lines.”

Semper Fi, Kelly

From Detachment Public Affairs Officer:

I would like to see if members and their spouse's would like to do a luncheon or

dinner at a local restaurant... Our wifes play a critical role in the Detachment and

we should include them and support them, as well. If I get a good response, I will

try to find a location that will provide a good time for all. Let me hear from you!

Kevin
